Upgrade your workbench!

Not long ago I purchased a bench at Home Depot that checked most of the boxes I would have wanted for a good workbench. At roughly $300, it wasn’t cheap, but it wasn’t cheaply built.

The bench had casters with locks, a crank for adjustable heights and two drawers. To protect the beautiful 24-by-52-in. butcher block surface, I added a new work surface out of laminated pine. To allow for a bench vise, I cut that panel about six inches longer on each end than the original bench top. I drilled holes for additional bench dogs and ended up with a very workable shop bench.
