The cover story of the first issue of SignCraft back in 1980 was a feature on the signs of Sanibel Island, Florida, and its adjoining island, Captiva—two beach islands off the Fort Myers, Florida, coast. Like many resort areas, they were home to plenty of great-looking, inspiring signs. Over the next 40-plus years of SignCraft’s print editions, we featured the island’s signs in articles several times as new signs joined the classics that remained.

Three years ago, Hurricane Ian wiped out most of the signs that had been a such large part of the look and feel of the islands. Creative designers and sign makers had spent decades helping to create the unique ambiance of that cool island destination.

Fortunately, you can still see some of those beautiful signs in “Remember ‘The Signs of Sanibel Island?’” along with links to all of those past articles on the signs of these two unique islands. Enjoy!
