George Seelander’s classic hand drawn sketches

George Seelander prepared hand drawn and tempera painted layouts long before people were even dreaming of using computers for their design work. Sketches were the “norm” during his life. Sketches were the initial steps sign makers had been doing for 75-100 years!

My friend and early mentor, Glen Newcomer, introduced me to George back when I was still in college and at a time when George was in semi-retirement mode. Back then, people on Social Security could only declare a small amount of additional income and still collect their benefits.

George had a sign shop, if you want to call it that. Actually, it was more like a couple of time weathered pole barns nestled down a wooded road in an obscure neighborhood in Northwest Oklahoma City.
