There’s nothing like a little friendly competition to make things interesting. Dan and Peter Sawatzky were talking about how different sign people each take their own approach to the same design when the idea came up to invite some highly creative sign people to make a project as part of a contest.
The point of the “contest” would be to make a Rube Goldberg device, which is defined as “A contraption, invention or apparatus that is deliberately over-engineered to perform a simple task in a complicated fashion.”
The “rules” explained that while these machines typically have many moving parts, actual movement was not permitted. The project had to fit within certain size constraints and ship in a container that would serve as the base for the display.
