Michael Hall grew up around cars. His dad had a hot rod and took Michael with him to race tracks. His dad was also a draftsman and an artist, so the graphics on the cars were a big part of the experience for them. Before long, Michael was building and racing cars.
When a local sign painter lettered his race car, Michael was intrigued. He started learning to letter and pinstripe. The year he graduated from high school, his parents bought him a subscription to SignCraft for Christmas.
By the time he was 20, he was a fireman for the city of Richmond. A couple years later he was picking up a few jobs, painting signs and pinstriping. He worked nights, so this fit his schedule better than going to a part-time job in the morning after running fire calls at night.
