The seven-second legibility test

I fully agree with the sentiments stated by Ken Millar [see Designing signs for legibility: Letter size and Designing signs for legibility: Viewing time] and others who have written on the subject of legibility. One thing that prevents the sign designer from getting the primary message to an adequate size for quick easy reading is excess copy.

I’m not sure if it’s been mentioned yet in the sign legibility discussion, but I give my clients this rule of thumb:
