It wasn’t long after Ray Sauder opened Raynbow Signs [Palmerston, Ontario, Canada] in 1993 that his younger brother Cam started helping out around the shop. In 1998, Ray asked Cam—who was finishing high school—to help him out for a while during a busy time, and Cam has been there ever since. Today he’s 40 and doing a lot of design work, vehicle lettering and a little of everything else in the busy shop. Here’s what he had to say recently about his 25-plus years in the business:

I started out just doing routine shop work, then started learning how to fabricate and install signs. Ray had a Gerber Signmaker 4B that was connected to a PC. At the time, that was the latest technology, because you could do the layouts on the PC and use the Signmaker as the cutter. I began working with that. I didn’t learn to do much brush lettering because everything was going towards vinyl. So, if Ray sells something that needs hand-lettered now, he has to do it!
