Tips & Tricks: Paint 3D signs the easy way

A hard rubber brayer is the easiest way to paint the raised letters on a sandblasted or router carved sign. Before, it would take long, tedious hours to paint the letters with a brush. Paint would run down the sides and require a lot of touch-up. With the brayer, a thinner coat of paint can be put on the letter in one tenth the time, and a second coat can be done just as quickly.

I used this technique recently when I restored a sandblasted sign I made over 20 years ago. I repainted the sign and gilded the lettering again. Take a look:
