In printing, a watermark is a transparent image or text that is applied over a layout, usually to protect it from being used without permission. But it’s also an interesting effect when used on a sign or graphic.

I often use a business’s logo as a watermark to add interest to a sign. I may take all or part of their logo and use it in the background. Often it’s the same color as the background, creating a subtle effect to add interest to the design.

This comes in handy when a client gives you a logo that is not particularly distinctive. Repeating it, or part of it, as a watermark can add another element to the layout and add interest to the sign.
