Put complementary colors to work

One of the tools Bob Behounek uses in his great-looking sign designs is the color wheel. It’s essential to a good understanding of color usage. If you don’t already have one, get one today or search for one on the computer. It helps take the guesswork out of choosing colors and will lead you to all sorts of interesting color combinations.

Bob often uses a complementary color in his layouts to add interest. On the color wheel, that’s the color directly opposite of any color. So the complement to red is green and the complement of blue is orange. A complement brings an interesting contrast in color to a sign design.

Complementary colors can also cause problems in a layout. The complementary color is like a spice in cooking. Use too much and it will ruin your dinner.
