Rob Cooper: Sketches and lettering

When Rob Cooper left Miami for his native New Zealand (and ultimately to Thailand) around 2000, he had to travel light. One of the things he had to throw overboard was a folder full of sign sketches and miscellaneous lettering which he left with
SignCraft.
We certainly don’t have room for all of them, but here’s a nice sampling of the incredible work in that folder. Some were done on a sheet of notebook or tracing paper; others are on a scrap of pattern paper or a piece of showcard board.
Rob often does a scale sketch of a sign before ever wetting a brush—working out the design details on vellum or paper, using ink, markers, paint and colored pencils. You may recognize some of these from finished signs that you saw in
SignCraft.
