Sign kit, brush box, sign box—call it what you will, but it’s still an essential tool for the sign painter. A well-stocked kit has everything you need to letter a sign on location, as well as to work out of in the shop. A while back we asked readers to send photos of their trusty sign kits, so here are a few for you to look over!
Richard Flint, Flint Signs, Oxford, Massachusetts
“It’s only 40-plus years old,” says Parks Manus, Parks Manus Signs, Peachland, North Carolina, “and I’m still using it!”
Frank Inzerillo, Rooster Graffix, Staten Island, New York
“The late Joe Dawson, New Castle, Pennsylvania, gave me this sign kit 50 years ago—early in my sign painting career. He bought it from the George Watson Co. nearly 50 years before that. It’s very compact—only 14-by-6-by-9-in. You can see his business card in one of the photos, complete with a three-digit telephone number.” –Tom McIltrot, SignCraft.com
“I got this kit at Butera School of Art in 1991,” says Tom Lamont, “and it’s been everywhere!” Tom is now the instructor in the sign graphics program at Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School in Upton, Massachusetts.
“I got this sign kit from my brother-in-law who came across it somewhere,” says Ray Grossi, Midwest Sign Works, Morris, Illinois. “Inside there is a can of Dolfinite Lettering Enamel and some Esser’s paint, which was manufactured in Milwaukee in the 1930s.”
