October is the month of monsters, witches, ghouls, goblins and creatures. Whether they came from outer space, out of the caves and caverns, or from the deep oceans and lagoons, menacing monsters and villains were guaranteed to make any moviegoer squirm in their seat.

In the early days of movies, brightly colored posters were created to entice viewers into the theaters for an evening of screams and horror. The artwork on the posters were hand drawn or hand painted to achieve the maximum effect on the potential movie audience.

The vintage posters you see here are from the 1930s, 40s and 50s. They show a wide variety of hand-lettered headlines and subcopy that might supply a bit of inspiration when a project that needs a shocking look arises for you. Enjoy!
