There are many fine wood signs made over the years that now need restored thanks to weather’s wear and tear. That’s the focus of Ian Macdonald’s work at Historic Sign Restoration, Rochester, New York. He repairs the cracked faces, peeling paint and rotting trim on signs like this one, bringing them back to their original beauty.

Most of the signs Ian has restored were made of redwood, cedar and mahogany. Though years of exposure have taken their toll, most of them can be restored. He shows how he does it step-by-step in “Bringing classic wood signs back to life.”

Here’s how it looked before restoration. We were unable to find who originally created the sign, but it’s great to see that it again looks like the day it was first installed.

After gluing the panel back together, repairing cracks and a good sanding, the sign was ready to refinish.
