Color is a critical factor in pinstriping, and it can be hard for some customers to express what color they like and don’t like. When pinstriping customers say they “don’t want it gaudy,” I find they are usually talking about colors rather than the design. I have a sheet of acetate that I have painted with stripes in two dozen colors. I lay it on their vehicle so that they can see how different colors would look.

It saves a lot of explaining about what colors might look best. Once I put the sample sheet on their vehicle, I usually get immediate results. They can see what I’m talking about without me dabbing different colors on their vehicle. I explain that the colors on the sheet are straight out of the can and that I can also mix a custom color if they want. But the color sheet gives us a place to start and saves a lot of time.
