Port Townsend is located on the remote northeast corner of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. The picturesque coastal town is nestled alongside the remote shoreline of Puget Sound. Port Townsend is steeped in history—at one time it was projected to be the “New York of the West”. That was never realized, but the impressive late Victorian style brick buildings remain to remind visitors of early efforts to reach the dream.
Tourists visit the seaport town to soak up the history and maritime charm, shop the unique boutiques, and dine in the many restaurants. Darla and I reached Port Townsend via a 20-minute ferry ride to Whidbey Island from the Seattle area, in conjunction with another 40-minute ferry ride from Whidbey Island.
The Port Townsend Historic Landmark District was established in 1977. With camera in-hand we roamed the historic streets. I found numerous “ghost signs” on the brick walls, along with many unique facade signs and A-frame signs. I’ve included some of the other cool sights I came across, too, for a change of pace from all the sign photos!
