So often, the right font makes the difference between a lively, appealing sign layout and the “just-another-sign look.” At the same time, going fishing for an interesting font online can eat up a lot of time, even if it is a lot of fun. There are tens of thousands to sift through, and most of them aren’t effective for sign work.
Ken Tamashiro [Ken’s Custom Signs, Long Beach, California] likes tracking down fonts that are naturals for sign layouts—clean, unique and legible. Most importantly, they are letter styles that work well at the large sizes needed for sign work.
Here are seven of his finds, and they are all available at very low cost. You may find just the right one for an upcoming design project, or maybe a workhorse font that you can put to use often.
