At the peak of his career, Bob Behounek was designing and lettering the graphics on about 400 trucks per year. Many of those were done in the days before computers and vinyl—you made a pattern, got your brushes and lettered it. They were in and out in a day or less. Time was a central consideration when it came to layout and production.
But it’s Bob’s eye for effective design that gave these vehicles real impact. Solid traditional layout skills, plenty of contrasts in letter styles and color, plus his hand-lettered scripts delivered appealing graphics that set his customers’ trucks apart. In “10 everyday truck layouts,” you’ll find plenty of terrific layout ideas.
“Most of these trucks were done 20, 30 or even 40 years ago,” says Bob. “Every once in a while I see one of the trucks from those times. They still stand out and are very easy to read and interesting.”
