A ribbon may be just what that layout needs

A ribbon or banner is one way to add the illusion of depth to an otherwise flat composition. It’s been a favorite tool of sign designers for years. You’ll see it in many situations, but it’s natural when a feeling of nostalgia is called for. Some words, like Classic, Anniversary, Old Fashioned or Antique seem right at home on a ribbon. You can design your own or look for them in clip art packages (key words: ribbons, banners). Hand drawn ribbons can be scanned for cutting or digital reproduction.

You’ll find plenty of clip art sources for ribbon graphics once you start looking. They’re easily modified to fit your layout needs. It’s a quick way to deliver that extra appeal you’re looking for.

Part of the history of ribbons is recorded in the signs and advertising of Americana. Proof of their appeal and adaptability is shown in the fact that designers have been using ribbons for centuries—and continue to use them today.
