One of the tools Bob Behounek uses in his great-looking sign designs is the color wheel. It’s essential to a good understanding of color usage. If you don’t already have one, get one today or search for one on the Internet. It helps take the guesswork out of choosing colors and will lead you to all sorts of interesting color combinations.
Bob often uses a complementary color—the color directly opposite of any color on the color wheel—to add an interesting contrast in color to a sign design. To be successful, one color must dominate the layout, then the complementary color is used on a secondary element in the layout, such as an outline or a graphic.
Complementary colors can also cause problems in a layout. The complementary color is like a spice in cooking. Use too much and it will ruin your dinner. But Bob explains all that and more in “Put complementary colors to work.”
