Most signs carry more than one message, and this presents an immediate problem to the reader. Their brain asks, “In what order should I attempt to read these messages?”
As a designer, you can do the reader a favor and cut the layout into easily-digestible pieces—rather than trying to make them eat it all in one bite. The sign will look better and will be more effective if you group the copy for them. Organizing each of the sign’s messages into individual, easy-to-read blocks of copy does the trick. That’s what Curt Stenz, Curt Stenz Graphics, Pikeville, Tennessee, did in the layout above.
In “Use copy blocks to manage the copy,” you’ll find four simple ways to do that, along with examples that show how effective this approach is.
